In E3 2015 we saw how Microsoft put an end to the controversy of backward compatibility and made Xbox One retrocompatible with Xbox 360 , something that delighted console users and twitched the PS4, who saw that Sony did not move chips in the matter and that they would still not be able to enjoy their old titles on their machine.

All this has led us to the big question: Can we ever play the PS3, PS2 and PSOne games on PlayStation 4 without having to pay for them again? For now everything seems to indicate that it will not be like that, but why? How difficult would it be to make PS4 backward compatible? The DualShockers portal   has been investigating and they have reached a rather curious conclusion that we want to share with all of you.

According to reports, it seems that everything is due to the original design of PS3and PS4 that would make their games incompatible. As they explain in the aforementioned medium, in the case of Xbox One it has been possible because Xbox 360 was built under the PowerPC architecture , which is very different from the x86-64 architecture of Xbox One but which does not make such a big difference as to prevent the emulation of titles in the new console. Something very different from what happens with the Sony machine.

As you know, PS3 was built under an architecture focused on Cell processor technology and on its SPU unit. This made all PS3 games need to be optimized to be played with this technology, so they would not be compatible with PS4 without a new optimization. A fact that would also explain the notable difference that has always been between Sony’s first party titles and the others since their studios had more detailed information on the operation of the console.

As we say, the Cell chip technology and PS3 SPU are so unique that emulation on PS4 is extremely complex. And is that the 8-core AMD x86-64 CPU Jaguar PS4 could not, today, perform the process of optimizing the games of past generations and get emulate them natively. This would mean that in order to do so, PS4 had to be redesigned, assuming a huge cost to Sony.

What happens then? We told you a few days ago that Sony does not close the implementation of PS4 backward compatibility for the future, although at the moment they do not even consider it. And, the company already offers the possibility of enjoying titles of the previous consoles on PlayStation 4 thanks to the PS Nowservice . The downside of this is that the game service in the cloud is paid and, as is logical, this does not end up pleasing users because it means they have to pay again for games they already have.

We will have to see if Sony decides to take action and if it offers some kind of option to be able to play the games that are already in the previous consoles making use of PS Now without having to pay for it . It would be an interesting alternative to backward compatibility if they could get the service to detect the original titles of PS3 , PS2 and PSX in the new console and allow them to emulate them from the cloud for free.
